Does Tongkat Ali boost testosterone?

Evidence-based · ~6 min read · Updated June 2026
Short answer

Likely yes — especially if you're stressed or older.

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) has some of the more promising evidence among herbal boosters. It appears to free up bound testosterone and lower stress hormones, with the clearest benefits in older men and those under chronic stress. The big caveat: extract quality varies enormously between brands.

Tongkat Ali — sometimes sold as "longjack" — is a Southeast Asian root used traditionally for energy, libido and vitality. Of the single-herb testosterone supports, it's one of the few with a growing stack of human trials rather than just folklore.

What the research shows

The most consistent findings come from studies in stressed and older adults. In those groups, standardized Tongkat Ali extract has been shown to raise testosterone, reduce cortisol, and improve self-reported mood and tension.

Mechanistically, Tongkat Ali is thought to work two ways: by lowering cortisol (releasing the same stress brake ashwagandha targets) and by reducing sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) — the protein that locks testosterone away and makes it unusable. Less SHBG means more free, biologically active testosterone, even if your total reading barely moves.

That SHBG effect matters most for older men, whose binding-globulin tends to climb with age — quietly shrinking the testosterone they can actually use.

The catch: extract quality

This is the ingredient where the brand on the bottle matters most. The clinical results came from standardized extracts (often labelled by their eurycomanone content, e.g. a "2% eurycomanone" or branded extract like LJ100). Cheap, unstandardized "longjack" powder may contain a fraction of the active compounds — or be cut with filler entirely.

The bottom line

Tongkat Ali is one of the more credible herbal boosters — particularly if you're older, stressed, or both. The evidence is encouraging rather than ironclad, and the single biggest determinant of whether it works for you is buying a properly standardized extract. Get that right, give it a month or so, and it's a reasonable bet.
